This morning, Mental Health America released its annual State of Mental Health in America report. Each year, they use federal data to evaluate the mental health of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Their findings in this year’s report are clear: the U.S. is in a mental health crisis. As I read through the report, I knew and know that the YOU ARE ENOUGH campaign is one that is and has helped so many people. When we get a billboard up, we know that we are helping people by the hundreds of thousands. We, as a society, need to remember that we can help someone on a daily basis by letting them know that we see them, even if it is just with a smile. We all simply want to be seen and feel worthy. It is time to come together to UNITE2HEAL!
Here’s a snapshot of what they learned:
🔹 23% of adults - nearly 60 million Americans - experienced a mental illness in the past year.
🔹 2022 had the highest number of deaths by suicides ever recorded in the U.S.; 5% of adults and 13% of youth reported having serious thoughts of suicide.
🔹 1 in 4 adults with frequent mental distress could not see a doctor due to cost.
🔹 1 in 5 youth had at least one major depressive episode in the past year; over half (nearly 3 million youth) did not receive treatment.
